Oil on panel in koa frame

During my childhood in Hawai‘i, the sugar cane field was common as were cane fires, slow-moving cane haul trucks and the warm smell of bagasse. Today, very little remains of this industry. King Cane shows some of the last sugar cane fields on Maui and is my attempt to preserve this once ubiquitous view. The design of the koa frame references King Kalākaua, under whose reign this industry developed and prospered.
