Wilderness, Arcady and Conquest reference Thomas Cole’s allegorical painting series, The Course of Empire, which depicts a landscape as it moves from a pristine state to a civilized empire and finally ending in destruction.

Unlike Cole’s paintings, a grand view of the landscape is denied. Wilderness is fragmented into miniature views painted on 194 slices of wood with bark intact.
