Wilderness, Arcady and Conquest reference Thomas Cole’s allegorical painting series, The Course of Empire, which depicts a landscape as it moves from a pristine state to a civilized empire and finally ending in destruction.

With the log slices now arranged in an oval, Conquest depicts the cleared landscape at sunset after trees have been felled.
