Wilderness, Arcady and Conquest reference Thomas Cole’s allegorical painting series, The Course of Empire, which depicts a landscape as it moves from a pristine state to a civilized empire and finally ending in destruction.

As this series progresses, the outer shape of the painting becomes less organic and more controlled. Arcady references a place of pastoral peace and simplicity: a romanticized image of man living in harmony with nature.
